uOttawa “Defy the Conventional”

Tabaret Hall and environs – University of Ottawa

Another shining example where FMAV supported the celebration of an iconic milestone was the University of Ottawa’s 50th Anniversary event, entitled “Defy the Conventional”. After 50 years of driving innovation through education, uOttawa charged FMAV with creating a multimedia spectacular that not only honoured the institution’s esteemed past, but gave a glimpse into the story that was yet to come. Supporting the massive program, FMAV worked in partnership with other event partners (décor, venue) to create a multi-dimensional space: part museum, part presentation hall, part tech lounge, and part event space. Highlights included:

  • Transform the Tabaret Hall into a Time Tunnel through which the audience experienced the rich history and achievements of uOttawa
  • Highlight and celebrate the 2015 Alumni Award Winners through multimedia displays in the Alumni Bridge
  • Create an impressive ambience and event environment within the temporary clearspan structure
  • Produce the uOdyssey multimedia presentation, bringing to life the compelling story of the University of Ottawa, complete with cutting-edge technology, immersive video projection, digital video content and a sound and light show

The greatest challenge in bringing this production to life was the physical marriage of the historic architecture with the temporary, clearspan tent space. To create a seamless, integrated experience across the multiple spaces, the team developed the idea of a Time Tunnel – a structure within which FMAV stationed various interactive modules that engaged and educated visitors with key messages about the event and the University as well as stories about its history and notable alumni.
