Ryerson School of Fashion: Mass Exodus

Mattamy Athletic Centre, Toronto

The Ryerson School of Fashion’s year-end showcase, Mass Exodus, has grown in size, scope and reputation to become the world’s largest student-produced fashion show – and in 2013, FMAV helped graduating students put on the show of the season with an innovative staging and technical production design. With a unique and cooperative approach, FMAV’s elite team of production managers, technicians, designers and operators worked in tandem with Ryerson’s Theatre School students every step of the way – from conception to the final show – while augmenting the students classroom learning with practical, hands-on experience. With 48 unique fashion designers and more than 300 models and artists, their talent and extensive
Bodies of work were magnificently showcased in a spectacle like no other. FMAV’s staging and technical production design included:

  • A unique 40’ x 40’ x 4’, diamond-shaped “in the round” elevated stage
  • With a nod to the venue’s history a 4-sided screen ‘cube’ hung over the stage. Reminiscent of a sports scoreboard, the massive projection surfaces vibrantly showcased video and animation content
  • Numerous lighting designs were employed to align with the thematic groupings of the students collections’, transforming the look and feel of the event as the programming progressed throughout the event
